In 1576, the Senate of the Republic of Genoa established the "Rolli," official lists of noble palaces designated to host ambassadors and foreign dignitaries. Today, 42 of these buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and represent one of the most extraordinary architectural systems in Europe. Many of them are located just steps from our hotel. The Palazzi dei Rolli are an extraordinary collection of noble residences built between the late 16th and 17th centuries in the historic center of Genoa, along the Strade Nuove, such as Via Garibaldi. The name derives from the "Rolli," or official lists of palaces deemed suitable for hosting, through   Lottery, ambassadors , and dignitaries on state visits, a system of public hospitality unique in Europe. These residences reflect the height of the Republic of Genoa at the height of its economic and cultural power in the so-called "Century of the Genoese." Characterized by imposing staircases, internal courtyards, loggias, and frescoes, the palaces showcase the architectural and artistic talent of the era. These buildings are not only architectural testimonies but also symbols of a society that combined power, diplomacy, and culture. Strolling among the Palazzi dei Rolli is like visiting an open-air museum where history, art, and daily life intertwine. Many of the palaces now house museums, art collections, or institutional offices, while others still serve as residential residences. Their charm has spread beyond Italy's borders. Paul Rubens was so impressed that he wrote the book "Palazzi di Genova," which made them known throughout Europe.
